Bunnie Carol (nee Haggett) Lambert was born in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada, on February 15th, 1947 to Wesley and Evelyn Haggett.  She was the eldest of six siblings including Sandra, Betty-Anne, Trisha, Billy and Shannon.  When mum was born, the town of Port Colborne was as such:

Around the world, 1947 remembers important historical events:  the Marshall Plan was proposed to help Europe deal with the devastation of WWII,

Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier, Anne Frank's now uber-famous diary was first published, India and Pakistan liberated themselves from the United Kingdom and declared independence; meanwhile, the nation of Israel was not yet in existence, undeclared until the following year.

Famous icons born in 1947 include musicians Elton John, Warren Zevon, Iggy Pop, Mick Fleetwood and Rupert Holmes, actors James Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Farrah Fawcett, writers Danielle Steele and Stephen King, entertainers Larry David and David Letterman, athletes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Nolan Ryan and Ken Dryden, politicians Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney and Kim Campbell... and even some murderers: Ottis Toole (murderer of America’s Most Wanted host John Wash’s son), Herbert Mullin and OJ Simpson.

And famous to me and many others, born in 1947:  Bunnie Carol Haggett

Passing on in 1947 were Al Capone, Aleister Crowley and Henry Ford.

Located at the bottom of the Golden Horseshoe, Port Colborne was a beehive of activity in these days in the years following World War II.  It is very close to the world famous Niagra Falls and a short distance from New York state:

Mum grew up in the 1950s and had vivid recollection of Hurricane Hazel which struck in 1954 when she was 7 years old, and living in Scarborough with her parents and siblings.  She often told people the story of how the mayor had put her family up in his own home during that hurricane, because flooding had driven many families from their homes.  It is rare for any hurricane to persist that far inland after coming off the eastern seaboard.  Hurricane Hazel is remembered by all who lived through it, including my mother.  Some photos of the devastation that hit the Toronto area:

Mum was an industrious and independent teenager and moved from the Toronto area to Sarnia, Ontario before she was 17, in 1963.  Working at the A&W on the Golden Mile in Sarnia, she met my father Pete, and they soon married...
